What is Argon?

Argon is used as a shielding gas in Sunstones Orion Welding Systems. During the welding, process metals are exposed to temperatures of upwards of 7000 Degrees. At these temperatures, most metals become liquid, which allows the formation of the weld. Argon is used to protect the molten pool of metal against elements in the Atmosphere including Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Hydrogen. These elements cause reactions with the liquid weld pool, such as porosity and increased weld spatter. Argon also plays an important role in maintaining Arc stability, which leads to increased weld penetration, better filler wire transfer, and better weld appearance.Sunstones Premium argon is 99.996% pure Argon (Argon 4.6). Pure Argon refers to the gas being just Argon, and not mixed with another gas.

About How Long Should My Argon Tank Last?

It depends on a number of different factors, such as frequency of use, pressure setting, and pre/post flow settings. Sunstones premium argon comes in an 50 scf tank, which is the most common size for use with Sunstones Orion Welding Systems. A 50 scf tank will last 6-9 months on average, depending on use.

A Tank for Every Need: Meet the Sunstone Argon Family

Sunstone provides three different sizes of argon tanks: Small, Smaller, and Smallest. While argon is key to quality welding, a tank of argon probably does not contribute to your aesthetic. So we make our tanks small to keep your customers’ attention on the jewelry, not the gas! Here’s what we offer:

Argon Mini. Sunstone’s smallest tank will fit in your purse, only 11.75 inches tall, provides .95 liters of premium argon, and delivers about 650 welds. For events that last only a few hours, the Argon mini will rock your world!

Argon Mini Plus. A tad larger than our smallest tank, the Argon Mini Plus is perfect for weekend pop-ups or events. At only 12 inches in height, the Plus will easily fit in a shoulder bag yet deliver 1.9 liters of premium argon, enough for about 1,300 welds.

Argon. Our largest tank can be easily stored under a workbench, standing only 27” tall but providing 10 liters of premium argon. With this tank, you can weld for a long time before you run out of gas. Unlike the Argon Mini and Argon Mini Plus, this tank can be refilled when empty. You can order a refill from Sunstone and have it delivered right to your door! Or, you can refill your tank at your nearest argon gas provider.

What is The Recommended Argon Pressure?

Sunstones Orion Welding systems work best at around 10 PSI. The pressure can be adjusted depending on the workpiece and how far the electrode protrudes from the welding stylus. The further out the electrode, the more argon pressure will be required in order to get proper coverage.
